学生生活

Ninth Grade at 目的—and Ninth Grade anywhere, for that matter—is often full of firsts.

第一次 living away from home. 第一次 on the back of a . 第一次 徒步旅行 and camping out under the stars. 第一次 navigating life in a dorm community. 第一次 writing an in-class essay.

每年, ninth-grade dormitory heads and other faculty leaders on campus collaborate on a program that aims to provide our newest students with the support, 信息, 技能发展, and community resources they need to succeed, 茁壮成长, and be happy in their new environment. At the heart of this holistic initiative is the hope that ninth graders will come away with a deeper understanding of the values that underpin 目的’s intentional community, 一种感觉有什么好, healthy decision-making looks like, and the knowledge that they are cared for, 支持, 和重视.

户外取向

Soon after arriving on campus, new students engage in five days that are a blend of camping and backpacking on beautiful Santa Cruz Island and an on-campus orientation focusing on the transition to being away from home, 骑指令, 宿舍关系. Not only do they learn the basics of backpacking, 户外导航, and wilderness safety and survival, but small groups engage in activities designed to build relationships, 信任, 和信心. Dialogues in which students share stories about their own culture and background or discuss what it means to act with honor, 公平, 善良, and truth in their everyday lives help jumpstart the process.

Ninth-Grade Foundations Class

回到校园, ninth graders meet once a week for their Foundations class, which is led in the first term by 梅根·卡尼, Director of 学生生活 and head of the ninth-grade 宿舍. The second term is a co-operative teaching approach with Mrs. 卡尼和 Ms. 钟. Other faculty members with certain expertises or perspectives also stop by to share their insight during relevant sessions.

First term topics and issues covered often include: “目的 101”: helping the students connect with and learn about each other; honing study and organizational skills; outlining School 规则 and expectations; understanding 目的’s 荣誉准则; increasing awareness around boundaries, 同意, and sexual harassment; breaking down the science of the brain and how students can harness that knowledge to become the most effective students and community members; practicing inclusion and celebrating diversity; cultivating self-awareness; and more.

Second term topics and issues include: Healthy relationships; SexEd; and 同意. In parallel with these sessions, prefects and advisors will often initiate conversations within their group of five to six charges to approach and engage with these and other topics in a variety of meaningful ways.

"The Ninth-Grade Skills Program helped me make a seamless transition from living at home to living in the 目的 community by teaching the values, 规则, and expectations of the School. I also learned vital 信息 about living alone which will serve me throughout college and life after school."
